Bruce Lee is The Big Boss by TixieLix Bruce Lee is The Big Boss by TixieLix
What started out as a Fei Long piece ended up just being a Bruce Lee fan art. I used so many references to get this pic to work as much as possible - in particular his face, coz in the end whether it's Fei Long, Marshall Law or what have you, they are essentially tributes to Bruce so I really tried to get that looking right. I've kept his fringe distinctly that of Fei's though...

The idea behind the whole setting and context was partially inspired by some great streetscape art of Hong Kong done by one of my work colleagues and also talking to my mum with her reminiscing about the same place she remembers growing up in. It was crowded, dirty, and noisy but it was also buzzing with energy and optimism. I wanted to capture that with this Bruce pic, because it was essentially that decision he made to move back to Hong Kong that really got his movie stardom going and I think he must've felt that same sense of energy and optimism when he returned there.

Trivia: "The Big Boss" is Bruce Lee's first major film. Also I chose to draw him in this outfit because Bruce was quite a snappy dresser and it was one of the suits he wore in my reference pics, hence it being the basis for one of Fei Long's alt costumes in SFIV ;D

haha yeah I love Bruce Lee quotes :D  He's actually quite learned and taught philosophy in an American college prior to becoming a super star ;)

Great Cha-Cha dancer also, amongst other things. I studied he's own style (the style that was no style) of Jeet Kune Do, way back in the 70s, and the philosophy of life and being alone that that taught me has remained with me to this day. I apply this 'way' to almost everything I do... Long live the king of everything, but nothing...!!!

Just be yourself, my friend: be like water...

Short story for you:

I was having an argument with my girlfriend over how much of a distaste I have for Lady Gaga, and proceeded to tell her that Kermit the Frog is, by far, way more popular.  And on my cluttered desktop is the exact photo ref of this Bruce Lee painting!  I showed it to her and she didn't know who it was...  For shame.

Hah, I've been wanting to do a quick sketch of this shot for a long time.  You've beaten me to it and have done an handsome job.  Nice work.

Fei Long went to the school of the Bruce Lee clones... Haha
I renember when in the Street Fighter film (The first one, not the bullshit called Legend of Chun Li) was called Sawada... Copyright reasons?
PD: Cool picture. ^^

Thanks again!

I believe the Sawada character was actually an original character created especially for the movie.  He was Japanese whereas Fei Long was from Hong Kong.

This is absolutely great!  You really got Bruce's look down (I remember he wore a suit like this).  He was indeed a very stylish dresser.  The environment is perfect too.  It looks and feels like Hong Kong.  I definitely need to travel to Hong Kong during one of my vacations.  I'll be honest and admit it's because I want to eat proper Cantonese-style Chinese food again (I grew up eating it in NYC's Chinatown)!  They have no knowledge of it here in S. Korea where I'm currently working and what passes for Chinese food here is atrocious (bastardized Northern style cuisine).  Anyway, wonderful pic and I'm sure the Little Dragon would be proud!

Thank you very much!  Yes, I highly recommend visiting HK when you can especially if you're a foodie like me :D  The thing about Chinese food is that it's so diverse since the country is so vast and has such a huge mix of climates and cultures.  I agree that the 'Chinese' food in some places can be pretty shocking and is diffinitely not authentic like in some places here in Aus that caters more for western taste... my advice is if you see lots of chinese ppl in the joint then it's most likely decent ;)
